Chair Tregub on the passing of Parks Director Ellen Corbett, former Assemblymember and Senate Majority Leader

Dear Democrats,

In 1994 a young mother shook up the establishment by ascending to the mayorship of the former sundown town of San Leandro. In the 30 years since then, she distinguished herself – and our county – through successful efforts to craft hundreds of policies that make me proud to be a Democrat, as Mayor, Assemblymember, Senate Majority Leader, and Parks Director.

But more importantly to me and to so many of us, she was a mentor and a friend, always investing in the next generation. I’ll never forget visiting her Sacramento office some time ago. She gave me a tour and said “This office belongs to you.” She meant all of us for whom she laid a path that wasn’t there before.

Ellen Corbett my heart weeps for this loss, but I also know you’re now at peace, with the knowledge that it is up to us to carry forward your legacy. We understand the assignment.
