Resolution on the City of Hayward Labor Dispute

WHEREAS, workers at the City of Hayward provide important public services in the libraries, in police dispatch, in HazMat inspection, in public works with street maintenance, landscaping and lighting, in sewer maintenance and wastewater treatment, and in city government administration; and

WHEREAS, since 2010, workers at City of Hayward represented by SEIU and by IFPTE have given back more than $7 million to help the City balance its budget, and that Hayward’s economy will only recover when working families can afford to contribute to the economy; and

WHEREAS, workers, public and private, across the United States are under attack by employers under the guise of a need to impose austerity and, as Democrats, we stand on principle against these attacks on working people, and we oppose the imposition of contracts on workers without meaningful and sincere attempts to reach agreement;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Alameda County Democratic Party stands with the workers at the City of Hayward in the fight for a fair contract and calls on all parties involved in the dispute to reach an amicable resolution to this difficult situation through honest negotiations at the bargaining table, and to pursue a solution without resorting to imposition; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Alameda County Democratic Party commits to aid and assist in the facilitation of a settlement at the City of Hayward that preserves good middle class jobs and will take all necessary action to help bring about an accord between workers and management.
