WHEREAS, The national public discourse around the need to implement sensible gun safety measures in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy provides a narrow window of opportunity for our state and federal government to take swift and decisive action in response to overwhelming public opinion; and
WHEREAS, 1220 murders involving a firearm occurred in California in 2011 according to the FBI, with firearms accounting for 68.1% of all murders in the State; and
WHEREAS, The Party must support the efforts recently undertaken by California’s State and Federal elected officials to introduce legislation, conduct public hearings, and provide their advocacy towards common-sense gun safety measures many of which are supported by a majority of American’s public and even a majority of National Rifle Association members;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Alameda County Democratic Central Committee, that it hereby supports the enactment of sensible gun safety measures at the State of California and Federal levels, including but not limited to strengthening background checks for gun registration, including more data in the FBI’s databases, repealing laws that give weapons manufacturers immunity from lawsuits, banning assault weapons and weapons that serve no other purpose than to kill a large number of the public in a short amount of time, limiting large-capacity magazines, reporting of ammunition sales, licensing of ammunition dealers, placing a tax on the sale of ammunition in California, requiring gun owners to purchase liability insurance, and ending the grandfathering of existing weapons which are illegal to purchase but legal to possess, while considering exemptions for qualifying law enforcement personnel and government employees, including legislative efforts by local partisan electeds gun safety legislation such as AB48, AB174, AB187.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be sent to President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, Governor Jerry Brown, California Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, California Assembly Speaker John A. Perez, and all members of Alameda County’s State Assembly, State Senate, and Congressional delegation.
