EMERGENCY RESOLUTION ON BART LABOR DISPUTE

Adopted by the Alameda County Democratic Central Committee Wednesday, August 7, 2013

WHEREAS, the uninterrupted safe operation of the BART system is crucial to the well being of the people of the Bay Area and a shutdown of BART would produce a severe and unnecessary hardship for both BART’s workers and riders; and

WHEREAS, the lack of progress in BART’s current labor negotiations has precipitated a crisis leading to outside intervention and may still lead to another shutdown of BART, and the commitment of all parties to the success of the negotiations is necessary to achieve a fair resolution to this crisis; and

WHEREAS, workers, public and private, across the United States are under attack by employers under the guise of a need to impose austerity and, as Democrats, we stand on principle against these attacks on working people;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Alameda County Democratic Party stands with BART workers in the fight for a fair contract and calls on all parties involved in the BART dispute to reach an amicable resolution to this difficult situation through honest, good faith negotiations at the bargaining table; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Alameda County Democratic Party commits to aid and assist in facilitating a settlement at BART that preserves good middle class jobs and will take all necessary action to help bring about an accord between workers and management.
